Monopol rot

2021

Region

The Blaufränkisch and Cabernet Franc grapes come from the southern and northern sides of the Aubühl vineyard, located west of Höflein. The soil is composed of deep, calcareous layers with sandy, silty-clayey sediments from the ancient Pannonian Sea, along with some loess in the southeastern part. The vineyard benefits from the cooling influences of the nearby forest, which imparts freshness and spice to the wine.

Harvest & Vinification

With the name Monopol, we wish to highlight the uniqueness of this wine. It does not come from a single vineyard but from a terroir that provides ideal conditions for producing wines of the highest quality. These are the last grapes to arrive at the cellar during harvest. They are hand-picked, gently destemmed, and fermented spontaneously. The grapes remain on the skins for 4 weeks. The Blaufränkisch matures in 500-litre Ybbstaler oak barrels, while the Cabernet Franc rests in 225-litre French oak barrels, with 50% new wood and 50% used. After blending, the wine ages for two years in oak and another year in the bottle. Monopol Rot is only produced in exceptional years and has great potential for long-term aging.

Vintage 2021

2021 was a year marked by harmony and perfection. Although spring began with mixed conditions—little winter moisture, dryness, and an early budburst—ideal intervals of rainfall and sunshine throughout the summer ensured the vines reached exceptional balance. Harvest began in early September under perfect conditions. All varieties displayed a remarkable structure of acidity and complete physiological ripeness. The 2021 vintage is undoubtedly one of the great ones, producing wines of extraordinary elegance and finesse.
